Heydar Aliyev Centre (Outside view)

Visit to Yanardag - Fire Mountain

"Fire Mountain" - "Yanardag" a mountain on Absheronpeninsula , 25 km from north of Baku. Literally, word "Yanardag" means "Blazing mountain". Blazing bodies of flame dance on stones and floor. Yanar dag is a natural gas fire which blazes continuously on a hillside on the Absheron Peninsula.
In the 13th century, when Marco Polo visited the then-Persian city of Baku, he mentioned numerous mysterious flames that could be found all over the region at various places of the Abseron Peninsula. These fires gave Azerbaijan the moniker “Land of Fire.” Even five centuries after Marco Polo, French writer Alexandre Dumas witnessed natural flames in a mysterious fire temple.

One can easily understand how these natural flames must have amazed and terrified people in history, and it doesn’t come as a surprise that the natural fires of Azerbaijan are considered to have played a crucial part in the creation of Zoroastrianism — a mystical faith, centered around ceremonial fire cults, which appeared in the region around 2,000 years ago.

The natural flames of Azerbaijan can be attributed to its enormous gas reserves. When exploitation of these reserves began, most of the natural fires burned out, due to a reduction in underground pressure. Of the natural fires that burn today in Azerbaijan, Yanar Dag is arguably the most impressive.

A 10m long wall of fire, that never extinguishes, is burning continuously alongside the edge of the hill, which naturally is at its most spectacular at night, when tourists and locals alike view the fire from a nearby teahouse. Local lore states that it was a shepherd that accidentally ignited the fire in the 1950s by tossing a cigarette, and that it has burnt ever since.

Visit Ateshgah - Fire Temple

Fire Temple is also known as the Temple of Eternal fire – Ateshgah. The place is well familiar across the different countries of the world. Originally it is located 30KM from the center of City Baku in the Surakhany Suburb.
It is well familiar due to the unique phenomenon of nature which is actually the burning of the natural gas. This temple consists of many natural gas burning outlets. In this phenomenon, the gas from the earth crust comes out of the surface of the earth and when it contacts with the oxygen it lights up. The present look of the temple was constructed back in the 17th and 18th century. And originally built by the Hindu community related to the Baku Sikhs.
The history of the Fire Temple Baku is very interesting and even longer. In the ancient time, that place was the Holy Place of Zoroastrians which use to worship the fire. This inextinguishable fire holds a mystical significance for them and that’s why they came here to worship fire. The Zoroastrian Ateshgah consists of 14 Sanskrit, one Persian and two Punjabi inscriptions. The two Sanskrit inscriptions at the Fire Temple Baku belongs to the Lord Ganesha and Jwala Ji while the second one is considered as the innovation of Lord Shiva. The inscriptions invented by Lord Shiva has swastika and motifs of the Sun.

Azerbaijan Carpet Museum

Even since the beginning, the museum housed not only carpets, but also other Azerbaijani art. Today, there are more than 14,000 exhibits, including rare carpets, exquisite jewelry, clothing, embroidery, delicate glass pieces, wood and felt. The first floor of the museum has flat-weave carpets and various examples of applied arts, including bags and saddles for horses. The second floor is pile carpets from the different regions in Azerbaijan, showing off the unique patterns and designs of this country. The third floor is all about modern designers, the history of the Carpet Museum, and a children’s room.
